D.W. Hawkins and The Sentinel Fire | Writinghood

My grandson, D.W. Hawkins is a gifted writer who has served his country for the last ten years as Crew Chief of the Black Hawk. He served two deployments in Iraq and his last deployment was in Afghanistan. During these hectic years he has spent every spare moment writing what I believe will be a best seller. "The Sentinel Fire" will be out in November. Dan has always been a fan of Fantasy and this fantasy is the best story of that genre I have yet to read. I feel privileged to be one of the few he has allowed to see parts of his book. The following is Daniel introducing his, "Sentinel Fire" I hope everyone will support him in his endeavors.

A Bad and Better Choice of Fast Food Breakfast Items | Quazen

Yes, we know how bad fast food is for our health, but sometimes through no fault of our own, it’s unavoidable. Even so, we can look for lower calorie items. We might be able to find fruit, yogurt and eggs. If not, there are still some items on the menu that are not as calorie laden as others. We ladies have to watch our figures.

Fiber The Staff of Life | Healthmad

Fiber The Staff of Life | Healthmad

Americans don’t eat nearly enough fiber. Fast food takeout and processed food do not fill the bill. We need whole grain, fruit, seeds, nuts and vegetables to provide enough fiber for a healthy life. Fiber aids digestion and is the least complicated food to prepare. An apple, a hand full of nuts, sunflower seeds, beans, all these provide fiber and lessens the risk of hypertension, cancer, heart-disease and many other diseases.

Shame on Atlanta Public Schools | Socyberty

Shame on Atlanta Public Schools for choosing to treat the gifted class to a five day trip to Disney World while denying the other students. It is inferring the average students are inferior and not good enough. We thought segregation ended in the 60s but it seems not. The average child should be praised and respected just as much for their hard work as the gifted who breeze through classes with little studying. None should be made to feel inferior.

Processed Foods That are Good for You | Quazen

Processed Foods That are Good for You | Quazen

Actually most processed foods are unhealthy, but some are good for you. You must read labels and check the ingredients. Rule out any salty, sugary, fatty foods that are full of preservatives. Leave them on the shelf where they belong, certainly not in your shopping cart. Frozen vegetables, which I don’t think of as processed at all, are better than fresh ones at the grocers. Just don’t take those with sauces.

Dangerous Food Contamination | Healthmad

Dangerous Food Contamination | Healthmad

Dangerous food contamination is in the headlines almost every day. E ven the greenest most succulent vegetables can be full of bacteria. We will never be absolutely free from dangerous bacteria, but we can follow all the safety rules to be as safe as possible. For instance never use the same cutting board to prepare both meat and vegetables. Refrigerate all leftovers within two hours. And if your greens look limp and soft, throw them out. Buy only what you know you will cook and eat within a few days. Follow all the rules and your family will be at less risk.

Obesity is a Grave Health Concern | Socyberty

Obesity is a Grave Health Concern | Socyberty

The heavily processed food on the grocery shelves are contributing to obesity and bad health. We seen to have lost the knowledge of how to make healthy choices. Food manufacturers have ads all over the TV. Children see ads for unhealthy food on cartoons and other shows aimed at youngsters. Obesity is one of our main health concerns today. Diet plays a huge role in weight gain and disease. We have more obese people now than we have ever had before, and it’s due to the heavily processed food we find on the grocery shelves. Our people have lost the knowledge to choose healthy foods over unhealthy food. Or maybe it’s because processed foods are easier to get to the table?

Writing or Speaking in Visual Pictures | Writinghood

How many of us would like to write more interesting articles, or carry on a more interesting conversation? Everyone who doesn’t have the gift of gab, or the nack of writing, I’m sure. We can train ourselves to be visual by writing or speaking with action. It’s like good wine. Give the narrative a full bodied taste. Show more and analyze less. Imagine your eyes are a camera taking snap shots. Add all the sights and sounds. Describe the white of the fresh fallen snow, the muddy roiling water after a flood. Make your readers see the picture.

Children of Sperm Donors | Healthmad

Children of Sperm Donors | Healthmad

When sperm donors became popular in the 1970s there were no tests done on the donated sperm and no medical history was taken of the donor. Those donor conceived children are now adults and some are finding out their donors medical history the hard way. Lessons have been learned. Donors must now give their medical history and tests are run on the donated sperm. There is little chance of these earlier donor conceived adults getting their medical information. Some are blogging and setting up websites to share their stories and hoping to find some clues.

Charles Frazier and The Appalachian People | Trifter

Charles Frazier and The Appalachian People | Trifter

Charles Frazier writes about the Appalachian people in the most interesting stories. Cold Mountain was written about the Civil War and the Appalachian people who participated in the war. Along with Gone With the Wind it is the book that most closely defines the Civil War. Charles Frazier was raised in Appalachia and knows the area and people from personal experience. That’s what makes the people feel so real in his stories. If you haven’t read any of his books yet, you have missed a treat.

It’s Time to Fill The Bird Feeders | Quazen

It’s time to fill the bird feeders if we want to see beautiful birds flitting around in our yards this winter. If you want to attract a certain species of birds, choose the type of bird feeder and seeds that they like. Nectar for humming birds and white millet for nuthatches and many other types of birds. Black oil sunflower seeds attract a great number of birds including goldfinches, titmice, woodpeckers, bluejays and more. With winter coming on food will be scarce. Birds will come back to feeding places they find this fall. So, fill up those feeders.

A New Child Care Plan for Divorced Parents | Gomestic

You have to feel sorry for children of divorce who are shuffled back and forth from house to house. I can imagine how disconcerting it would be. Children like their own room with their own things. But what is a divorced couple to do? Well, there is a new plan afoot for children of divorce. Critics say it isn’t a good plan, but I disagree. If children can stay in their own home, why not? It’s the parents who changed the family dynamics, not the children.

Guide Dogs for The Blind | Socyberty

Guide dogs for the blind have to go through much more training today than previously. With all the heavy lanes of traffic, push button walk signals and all the changes that have taken place during the last years it isn’t easy. Training is much more complicated but these dogs still pass with flying colors. Without these guide dogs, blind people would have much less chance of living a normal life. During a lifetime a blind person will go through several dogs, but when the dogs retire, they can stay with the owners if it’s agreeable.

Teenage Abuse on Facebook | Socyberty

Teenage abuse is happening on Facebook. Some kids are so bullied and intimidated on Facebook that they commit suicide rather than face another day of online abuse. If you are a parent who has a child on Facebook, Check to see what their friends are saying. It could save your child’s life. Cyber bullying is carried to great extremes. The chances are your child wont tell you, due to embarrassment and shame. I am speaking about girls rather than boys, but it happens to boys as well. So don’t be shy about looking at both sexes Facebook.

Young People and Finance | Gomestic

Young people have a problem with personal finances and there is a perfectly good reason. It isn’t taught in high school. Not the specifics, anyway. It is taught in a wider range of social studies but not in a way that matters in managing a person’s personal finances. Raising awareness is the first step in getting this situation corrected and also having teachers certified to teach personal finances. In a recent survey of high school students tested only 47 percent scored well. That leaves over 50 percent of high school grads out in the cold and victims of the financial system.

Human Body Host for Bugs? | Scienceray

Human Body Host for Bugs? | Scienceray

The human body relies on bugs for health and life. Without the microbes the human body plays host to, there would be no human life. Scientists tell us we are 90% bugs and 10% human. The number of microbes our lives depend are staggering. Maybe it would be more appropriate to label ourselves as a "human-microbe hybrid".
